I don’t remember how my family first became involved in the UFW’s organizing efforts, but my 3 siblings and parents became quite active in the promotion of the boycott in the Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) area. Barbara Macri was one of the organizers who traveled from California; I remember that she worked tirelessly. She would shuttle us all over the place to billboard and leaflet in her old station wagon. I can still picture her pulling leaflets and signs from the back of her car. Local celebrities, including Franco Harris, involved in fundraising and other public events. I remember one occasion when Cesar Chavez came to town for an event. I got to meet him (very briefly - pretty much a handshake and a hello) - quite a thrill! Those were such memorable times with amazing activists!
