I was involved in the lettuce and grape boycott of the 1970s, in protest against the growers-teamsters union sweetheart contract. my activity took place first in the metropolitan boston area, and later in the providence r.i. area. i was just a foot-soldier. wore out lots of shoe-leather on picket lines.
the experience above all strengthened an already developing personal trait of patience. something that later on got me through the anti-apartheid movement of the 1980s up to South Africa’s first elections of 1994. and that patience has strengthened my activities in tenant advocacy and other areas of struggle.
