I grew up in central valley California and am the daughter of farm workers. Because my parents were considered white, they were able to move on from working as farm workers and eventually owned their own farm. I saw how the workers were treated in the fields. Their families were broken up, they had no sanitation facilities and their work was not covered by the usual labor restrictions. This was because the farm lobby had such power over the need for low wages. I have been so pleased to see many people of Hispanic descent also achieve status in the United States. Labor laws need to be extended to all workers, and especially farm workers.
