When I was a young girl, I heard about Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers. I was so supportive of the cause that I stood outside of markets and asked each person to boycott grapes. This was during the late 1960s. I lived in a basically white middle-class neighborhood and some people were rude to me, but most people were kind and empathetic. That was the first political cause I ever became involved in. I didn’t know Mr. Chavez or the United Farm Workers, but I didn’t need to know them in order to feel the rightness of what he and they were doing. “Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed” - Cesar Chavez.
